Holidays or day trips to South Shields offer a mix of a seaside and coastline experience for adults and families of all ages. Sandhaven Beach is the resort's main beach and offers long stretches of golden sand and impressive sand dunes, perfect to enjoy a picnic, relax and watch the world go by. The beach is much loved and it's easy to see why given its location, views and sandy beach.

An award winning beach

It's won a number of awards for the quality of its sands and water quality, which it holds on to year after year.

It has Blue Flag status as well as the Seaside Award from leading environmental charity, Keep Britain Tidy. The awards act as a guarantee that South Tyneside has one of the best beaches in the world.

Sandhaven Beach offers the traditional seaside experience of making sandcastles, dipping toes in the sea, writing names in the sand, exploring rockpools or simply playing family and childhood seaside games all day including digging a big hole!

There's lots going on

The beach and surrounding area is often home to many events, such as sandcastle competitions, kids entertainment and lots more.

It's also a great spot to enjoy a game of volleyball (volleyball nets are in place during the summer), frisbee, football and other beach games. You can also have a go at surfing or windsurfing.

Behind the beach is a lovely promenade that stretches the length of the seafront and on to the scenic clifftop paths.

And behind the beach is Ocean Beach Pleasure Park, The Dunes and South Marine Park with its miniature steam railway, as well as a number of seaside restaurants, cafes or pubs.
