Sandhaven Beach

Holidays or day trips to South Shields offer a great seaside experience for all ages.

Sandhaven Beach is the resort's main beach and offers long stretches of golden sand and impressive sand dunes, perfect to enjoy a picnic, relax and watch the world go by.

The beach is much loved and it's easy to see why given its location, views and sandy beach. It is a recipient of Keep Britain Tidy's Seaside Award, in recognition of it being one of the best beaches in the country.

Sandhaven, South Shields was the UK's beach of the year 2022, according to The Sunday Times annual best beaches guide, published online and in print on July 3 2022. The guide is the definitive and most comprehensive list of Britain's 50 best beaches.

There's lots going on

The beach and surrounding area is often home to many events, such as sandcastle competitions, kids entertainment, music events and lots more.

It's a great place to enjoy some exercise, whether that's for a run or a game of volleyball (volleyball nets are in place during the summer).

You can also have a go at some watersports. South Shields Surf School offers lessons in paddle boarding or surfing as well as equipment hire if you don't want a lesson. 

There's a lovely promenade that stretches the length of the seafront and along to the scenic clifftop paths.

Alongside the beach is also Ocean Beach Pleasure Park, The Dunes and South Marine Park with its miniature steam railway, as well as a number of seaside restaurants, cafes or pubs.
