Key current tourism statistics

  • 2.6 million people visited South Tyneside in 2020.  This was down by 64% on 2019*
     
  • Visitor expenditure (direct and indirect spend) in South Tyneside in 2020 was £130.6 million, a fall of 65%*
     
  • The number of people directly employed in tourism in South Tyneside in 2020 stood at 1,211, a fall of 63%*
     
  • Day visitors spend on average £31.68 per person*
     
  • Satisfaction levels are high, especially in relation to satisfaction with the event programme and things to see and do**
     
  • The South Tyneside Festival takes place throughout June, July and August making it one of the longest and largest festivals in the North East. It celebrated 30 years in its current format in 2018
     
  • The South Tyneside Festival is particularly well known for it's Sunday Concerts in July and has attracted artists in recent years such as Billy Ocean, Sister Sledge and The Proclaimers to Bents Park, our events arena at the heart of South Shields Seafront
     
  • The Festival's Summer Parade was re-launched a couple of years ago, and goes from strength to strength. More than 2000 people take part in it from around the North East, and it's the biggest carnival parade of its kind in the North East
