Flanked by both the River Tyne and the North Sea, South Tyneside is an ideal place to enjoy a number of water sports.


With long stretches of sandy beaches, South Shields is a superb location for windsurfing and surfing.

South Shields is also the perfect spot for scuba divers, with a number of shipwrecks off the coast to explore, particularly beside the pier.


South Tyneside also offers a variety of sailing conditions, whether they are in the calmer waters of the Tyne Harbour or along the beautiful scenic coastline.

Canoeing is also a popular pastime in the borough with many sheltered coves nestled into the cliffs to explore.

Water Activity Centre

South Tyneside's Water Activities Centre is based on the seafront next to the Littlehaven Beach.

They can deliver a range of exciting water activities for groups including:

  • sailing
  • open canoeing
  • kayaking
  • paddle-surfing
  • windsurfing
  • jet-skiing

A range of qualification courses are also provided through the centre. All staff are fully trained, qualified and teach water safety skills as part of any activity.
