Content:

Poetry plays an important role in the lives of our children and young people.  It offers a unique way to foster creativity, support mental wellbeing, and encourage self-expression.  Notably, it can be a powerful tool in literacy education, particularly for disadvantaged children who consistently show higher engagement with poetry (The National Literacy Poetry Report, 2024).  It can't just be a 'one-day-a-year' event, multiple strategies need to be in place to raise the profile of poetry so children can reap its rewards year-round.

This session will cover:

  • How to teach poetry across the Primary Phase ensuring coverage of the National Curriculum requirements
  • Progression across year groups
  • The different types & forms of poetry
  • The importance of performance
  • How to create a poetry friendly classroom

Expected Impact on Schools:

  • To build teachers' knowledge, confidence and expertise in the delivery of poetry

Target Group:

  • Teachers
  • Support Staff
  • ECTs
