Tyne Pedestrian and Cyclist Tunnels

After being closed for a number of years for refurbishment, the historic Grade II-listed pedestrian and cyclist tunnels are once again open.

Visitors can cycle or walk from one side of the River Tyne to the other and experience the unique structure, which has been a key link for the people of Tyneside since 1951.

A multi-million pound refurbishment has been carried out over the past few years to give the tunnels a new lease of life, while conserving most of their original features.

The most significant change is the replacement of two of the four wooden-tread escalators, once reputed to be the longest in Europe, with inclined lifts. The two remaining escalators have been preserved in situ and their mechanisms displayed for all to see.

Check opening times before you travel. The tunnels are generally open 7 days a week between 6am and 8pm.
