Visiting our beaches

Here are some practical bits of information to help you plan your visit to our beautiful beaches!

Getting here and parking

Along our seafront there are numerous pay and display car parks. There is also a public pay and display car park at Marsden Bay, next to the lift and stairs that provide access to the beach.

At council car parks you can pay by using the PayByPhone app or by cash.

South Shields Seafront is only about a ten minute walk along Ocean Road from South Shields Town Centre, the main bus station and car parks. Find out more about parking in South Shields Town Centre.

The seafront area is also served by a number of bus routes.

Dogs on beaches

Dogs are not allowed on Sandhaven Beach between 1 May and 30 September between the hours of 8am and 6pm.

They are however allowed on Littlehaven Beach (next to Sandhaven) and Marsden Beach throughout the year.

Dog litter bins are provided at various points throughout the area.

Barbecues

Disposable BBQs only are allowed on resort beaches.

Please dispose of your waste sensibly in the bins provided.

Toilets

There are a number of toilets beside our beaches. See Public toilets.

Adapted wheelchairs are available

Local charity Beach Access North East can provide you with specially adapted wheelchairs and equipment. These allow for easier movement along the sand and for splashing in the sea. They can be picked up from Sandhaven Beach, South Shields.

Seals

Seals often come ashore to rest, digest their food and regain their strength, particularly after high tides or stormy weather which can leave them exhausted. Please keep your distance and do not approach them. For more information see: British Divers Marine Life Rescue.

South Shields Visitor Information Centre based at The Word can provide you with lots of ideas on making the most of your visit, sell foreshore parking permits, launch ramps and a number of event tickets.

They also sell a wonderful range of souvenirs including art, jewellery, books, coasters and postcards.

They make lovely gifts for family and friends, or simply just as a reminder of a great visit to the seaside!
