Tynemouth walk from The Word (walking for wellbeing)
Come and join us for a walk and a natter in good company.
We will meet at The Word then depart for the 1.15pm ferry across to North Shields (please bring appropriate fare or a travel card). On the other side, we will walk up the ramp to Tyne Street from where there are superb views across the river. Further along, we will take some steps back down to the quayside before walking under Knott's Flats up to the Collingwood Monument and on to the Tyne Estuary viewpoint. There are benches here to sit enjoy the spectacular outlook along the coast and over the sea. Our return route will take the lower path by the river and quayside.

- Time: Approximately 2 hours 30 mins (including ferry travel)
- Distance: 4 miles
- Total height climbed along the route: 245 ft
- Terrain: Good footpaths (concrete or tarmac) for most of the walk. There are a couple of short sections on grass or earth near the end of the walk.
- Steps: There is a long set of steps leading down to the quayside from Tyne Street. There is also a short but steep set of steps leading down from the Tyne Estuary viewpoint.
- Wheelchair accessible: No
- Toilets: There are toilets at The Word and halfway along the walk at Low Lights Car Park.
Public transport to The Word
South Shields Interchange (bus and metro) is only a 6 minute walk from The Word. The ferry landing is only 3 minutes away.
