A lovely walk down to the historic Herd Groyne Lighthouse.
This little ramble will take us down to the sea front where we will follow the path along the promenade, past the Weebles and up to the Herd Groyne Lighthouse. Built in 1882, the Victorian lighthouse is a local landmark and a great spot for watching vessels entering and leaving the Tyne. From here, we will walk through the North Marine Park and up to the Lawe Top before following the riverside walk back to the town centre. This walk provides some excellent views across the river and harbour towards Tynemouth.
- Difficulty: Easy
- Time: 1 hour 30 mins
- Distance: 3.5 miles
- Total height climbed along the route: 176 ft
- Terrain: Good footpaths (concrete or tarmac) throughout the walk. There are some moderately steep paths within the South Marine Park.
- Steps: There are large sets of steps leading up into the North Marine Park and walking down to the riverside path. However, these can both be avoided with a very slight detour.
- Wheelchair accessible: No
