North Marine Park, located on South Shields' seafront near Littlehaven Beach, offers lots of fun for the whole family to enjoy. The historic park has recently undergone a transformation to return it back to its Victorian splendour. With great views from the park over the coastline, this is a must see when visiting South Tyneside.

Themed Children's Play Area

The North Marine play area features 16 pieces of bespoke brightly-coloured play equipment, inspired by South Tyneside's rich maritime heritage and the nearby Arbeia Roman Fort. It comes complete with several swings, 'shipwreck' slides, a mast, drawbridge, see-saw, springers, multi-play climbing frames and a wheel-chair accessible roundabout.

Adult Fitness Trail

The Proludic Vitality Trim Trail is designed for those aged 14 and over and features 11 specialist steel obstacles that enable users to enjoy free full body workouts outdoors.

The equipment includes pull-up and push-up stations, bars, hurdles and a sit-up bench, to name a few. As well as benefiting lone adults or friends wanting to improve their fitness, its location makes it ideal for use by parents or guardians supervising their children playing.

Exploring the Park

North Marine Park has several walking trails that you can enjoy. The main embankment has been shaped to provide an accessible for all ramped path, in line with the historic maps and photos, so everyone can easily explore the park.

Make your way up the striking and newly restored Grand Promenade staircase, to reach an elevated point. Reach the park's highest point near Lawe Top, to find an incredible viewing platform for the coastline, harbour and mouth of the river.

While you explore North Marine Park, keep your eyes peeled for the Word Beacon, a new maritime-inspired piece of public art overlooking the mouth of the Tyne. The 6-metre sculpture, made from weathering corten steel, highlights interesting words and occupations associated with the Borough's once thriving maritime and shipping industries.

Another public art installation to check out is the interpretation of the park's former bandstand to create a new performance area. This low-level performance backdrop has been adorned with details from the ornate ironwork of the park's former bandstand.

There are plenty more sights to see within the park, including the community garden, the newly constructed stone grotto, as well as Victorian style planting, furniture and lighting.

The Friends of North and South Marine Park

The Friends of the North and South Marine Parks were formed in 2007 as part of the Heritage Lottery Funded restoration of the South Marine Park

They are a very active group of volunteers who work closely with the Council and partners to protect and develop our seafront parks.

They organise a number of events, from litter picks to petanque, walks to live music.
